TWO happy campers from Bolton are in with a chance of bagging £1,000 on a new ITV show.

Shobhna Fendlen and Jennifer Cunningham are the current stars on Hello Campers, a new programme which follows five couples who head out to a different European campsite each week with the aim of winning a cash prize.

The long-term friends were picked to appear in the programme after impressing the producers with their personalities — and they wasted no time name-dropping their hometown in the first episode along, which aired on Monday, along with a list of famous people who were born here.

On the show, the couples have to set up camp, pitch their tents and meet their fellow holidaymakers before carrying out camp duties and joining in for group activities such as ice cream making, parasailing, cheerleading and yoga.

Mrs Cunningham, aged 51, from Horwich, said: "It was a fantastic experience. I used to go camping all the time when I was a youngster so it was second nature to me really.

"There was one time Shobhna and I were talking to the camera listing all the famous people we knew who were born in Bolton and we had brain freeze and forgot Vernon Kay's name. But little did anyone know we had actually been filming since 7am.

"We got to do some really fun activities. My favourite was the DJ one — I pulled in quite a crowd.

"The only negative I can think of is it got really cold at night time despite us being in Spain so we had our hats and mittens on, but then in the morning the sun was shining which more than made up for it."

Over six weeks, the show will travel to Spain, France, Italy and Portugal with a new group arriving each week.

Mrs Fendlen, aged 51, said: "We've been friends for years so when Jennifer asked me to join her I couldn't wait.

"I've never been camping in my life so it was quite an experience but really good fun.

"It was really cold at night so we were quite sleep deprived, but the people we were with were nice. It definitely got more competitive as the week went on though.

"My highlight was the bullfighting. We got to speak to the matador and have a go with the cloak, which I never would have done if I didn't do the show. It was great."
