VISITORS can go backstage when the Octagon Theatre holds an open day next month.

The free all day event will feature a backstage tour, arts and crafts, prop-making, introduction to lighting and sound, stage-make up sessions, and many more one-off activities for all ages.

Taking place on Saturday, March 5, from 10am to 4pm, the open day is particularly designed at families who have not been to the Octagon before to see what it can offer.

Artistic director Elizabeth Newman said: “We want to open our doors to everyone, and an open day where every activity is free felt like the best way for us to do this.

"We want to offer new and seasoned visitors the opportunity to take a sneaky peak backstage, and explore the costumes, props, lights and sound that helps to bring our Theatre to life.

"We’re also keen for people to have fun with stage make up and make things with our brilliant production department.

"The Octagon makes theatre for everyone and with everyone — this feels like a great way to meet new audiences and reconnect with old friends.”

Those interested in how technology plays a major part in telling stories on the stage can join members of the theatre’s technical and creative team to gain an insight into the techniques, equipment, and magic of light and sound in the theatre.

For younger audiences, there’s also the opportunity to get involved in interactive storytelling sessions in a soft play area with Artistic Director, Associate Producer Deborah Dickinson, and BAFTA-nominated New Writing Associate, Janys Chambers.

Most of the activities will be running all day but backstage tours need to be booked in advance.
