The 39-year-old, believed to be from Bolton, suffered fatal injuries after crashing into a pedestrian island in Plodder Lane at 7.20pm last night.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Eyewitnesses have described how a doctor and several nurses from the nearby Royal Bolton Hospital stopped and got out of their cars to help the man, who was concious immediately after the crash.

Christine Osborne, aged 59, lives directly outside the scene of the incident in Plodder Lane, she said: "I was on the landing and had just looked out of the window when I saw the gentleman hit the bollard, I immediately got my dressing gown on and rang for an ambulance.

"When I got outside there was already another man helping and then a doctor got out of his car to help and so did about four nurses.

"They all acted like heroes and gave him the best fighting chance, he was concious at the time and mumbling."

"It was so upsetting to hear that the man had passed away and I am heartfully sorry for his family, I would want them to know that everybody did their very best for him."
