THE future of Farnworth is, quite literally, looking rosy — as the town is set to get a floral makeover.

A new scheme has been started by Farnworth residents and councillors which will see new plants such as flowers brought into the town centre.

The plants will be on display along King Street, Brackley Street, Market Street and the top of Moses Gate.

This new initiative comes after years of campaigning by Farnworth residents Carol Crawley and Kath Gough to improve the look of the town.

Mrs Crawley, aged 64, of Cawdor Avenue, Farnworth, said: "I'm absolutely over the moon. We have been asking for this for a while so it for to finally to come to fruition is fantastic.

"We want this because we care about Farnworth and this is something that will hopefully make people feel really positive about the town.

"Farnworth is a nice place — it's got some buildings, we are going through a regeneration — we are a town which is on the up. These plants will show that."

Mrs Gough, aged 60, also of Cawdor Avenue, added: "I think this scheme will show that Farnworth is not forgotten. This will bring the town back into the minds of people across Bolton and will benefit Farnworth in the long-term in terms of footfall.

"We need to build on what we've achieved and help maintain these plants."

The source of the funding for the scheme has not been officially decided yet, however it will come from either the Farnworth area forum budget or the Farnworth neighbourhood management team.

Farnworth councillors Asif Ibrahim and Jean Gillies have given their full backing to the scheme and are looking for community groups, local businesses and gardening associations to assist with the upkeep of these plants.

Cllr Ibrahim said: "It's really important we keep this scheme going. We are open to any voluntary or community group who want to help us.

"This scheme shows that Farnworth is a good community — people really look out for each other and this is about trying to improve that sense of togetherness and community."

Cllr Gillies added: "I think it's brilliant that we are improving the look of Farnworth. This scheme, coupled with the regeneration of the town centre, will make Farnworth a more appealing place and should generate more revenue for the town."

The scheme will be co-ordinated by Farnworth and Great Lever neighbourhood manager John Pye.
