FARNWORTH residents are so furious about the amount of litter in their area they are clearing it up themselves.

Those living on Greenland Road are picking up empty beer cans, crisp packets, drinks cans and bottles and other items of rubbish on their street.

They have also complained about piles of waste which have been dumped on a beauty spot off Greenland Road.

Bolton Council says a fly-tipping incident earlier this month is being investigated and that two prosecutions for fly-tipping dating back to last year are pending.

Greenland Road resident Kevin Gleeson says more must be done to monitor people dumping rubbish and has called for the introduction of new bins on his street.

Mr Gleeson, aged 70, said: "Where we live constantly looks like a tip. The street is a nice street, the school is a nice school, but there's rubbish all over the place — it's horrendous.

"It's not nice for the environment and it's not pleasant to look at. You don't expect to live on a street that looks like this."

Peter Brabin, a resident of nearby Boscobel Road, visits Greenland Road every day to pick up newspapers and has complained to the council several times over the years about the issue of rubbish on the street.

Mr Brabin, aged 69, said: "It's an absolute mess. This is a nice, green area which is being spoilt and it's not like we have many green areas round here."

Both Mr Gleeson and Mr Brabin suggested some of the litter had been dumped by pupils at nearby Mount St Joseph School.

Carol Davies, director of finance and resources at the school, said: "Whilst there may be some cases of pupils dumping litter, not all people using the road are children.

"A significant amount of the waste which has been left on Greenland Road, such as alcohol cans, would not belong to the children.

"We teach our children to be good citizens who are environmentally aware."

A council spokesman said: "We are aware of a number of flytipping incidents at land off Greenland Road. The latest incident in January is currently being investigated and there are two pending prosecutions relating to incidents last year. We take flytipping very seriously and will always fine or prosecute where we can find evidence of the perpetrators.”

“ We would suggest that residents on Greenland Road who have concerns regarding litter dropped by school children should speak directly to the school. Officers will also be working in partnership with the school to look at preventing the problem."
