FAT cat bankers and that annoying 'Go Compare' opera singer have been previous victims of the infamous Farnworth Cricket Club bonfire night.

But this year organisers are planning a more traditional guy — Guy Fawkes — as they prepare for the annual event.

A spokesman said: "After years of putting the heat on various fat cats, it’s be back to basics for Farnworth Cricket Club's annual bonfire and fireworks extravaganza."

The event on Friday November 6 starts at 6pm at the Lavender Road ground.

Bonfire night is tomorrow but there are a whole host of events taking place over the weekend.

Leverhulme Park’s spectacular community firework display and funfair will return on Friday November 6.

The event begins at 6pm with the opening of the fair. A range of fantastic rides will be on offer, as well as traditional food favourites such as black peas, toffee apples and candy-floss.

Presenters from Tower FM will entertain until 8pm when a free community firework display starts and the night sky will then be filled with a dazzling display, complete with dramatic musical accompaniment.

There is limited parking on site and visitors are encouraged to travel by public transport.

Stewards will be present throughout the event, providing visitors with a safe environment to enjoy the display.

To ensure everyone’s safety, visitors are asked not to bring their own fireworks or sparklers to the event.

Residents are also advised that they should only attend organised bonfire and firework displays.

Cllr John Byrne said: “Our fireworks display will be a dazzling display of colour and light and we’d like to encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the funfair, food and fireworks.

We would also encourage people only to attend an organised bonfire and not to bring their own sparklers to the event, for the safety of themselves and others.”
