A MULTI-AWARD winning Farnworth playwright has been honoured after a college's new theatre was named after him.

The Jim Cartwright Theatre, named after the playwright, director and actor, was unveiled at a star studded launch at Bury College on March 28.

Mr Cartwright joined the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Dorothy Gunther, BBC's The Royle Family actor John Henshaw and Artistic Director of the Bury Met Theatre David Agnew, among others, for an evening of dance performances, and monologues and songs from his catalogue, by students.

Jim Cartwright said: “I am truly honoured to have this theatre named after me.

"Tonight has been very moving for me, with so many wonderful tributes from major figures in the industry and performances from students past and present. I cannot thank everyone involved enough.

"I hope this theatre will be a theatre of dreams and launch thousands of students on their individual journeys to success.”

Mr Cartwright's work has been translated in to over 35 languages and is in almost continuous production around the world, including at The National Theatre and on Broadway.

The theatre will be the new home to the college's performing arts school and will play host to future drama, performing arts, dance and musical showcases from talented youngsters.

Andy Tomlinson, Curriculum Director of Performing Arts at Bury College added, “The evening was a celebration of the work and craft of Jim Cartwright.

"It was also the celebration of our links and liaisons in the community and the profession, the celebration of the talent of our students, past, present and future.

"We are so honoured that Jim Cartwright is willing to be associated with us. It was a fitting tribute to Jim and student talent.”
