THE deputy mayoress of Bolton has heaped praise on the Royal Bolton Hospital following treatment she received after breaking her wrist.

Dee Shaw is now backing The Bolton News campaign to see the hospital selected as one of five “super hospitals” in Greater Manchester.

Mrs Shaw, who is married to Cllr Colin Shaw — last year’s mayor of Bolton and current deputy mayor — suffered the injury after falling when out watching Bolton’s Skyride event on June 1.

The fall caused Mrs Shaw, who is aged 69 and lives in Albert Road West, Heaton, to break her wrist in two places.

She was taken immediately to A&E at the Hospital in Minerva Road, Farnworth.

After initial treatment in A&E, she was later called back to undergo surgery on what was a complicated break and she has now had pins and plates put in her wrist.

Mrs Shaw said the level of care she received during her visits to the hospital were “excellent” and made a painful ordeal much more bearable.

She added: “It was all dealt with in a very professional and friendly manner, every one we met in every department had a smile on their face and explained what was going on thoroughly.

"No-one knew I was the deputy mayoress so there was no special treatment, it just came across as a really slick operation with friendly staff.”

The Royal Bolton Hospital is currently vying to be one of five facilities in Greater Manchester chosen to become “super hospitals” which bosses say would lead to an investment in the A&E department, as well as maternity, children and obstetrics.

Mrs Shaw has given her backing to The Bolton News’s Better Health for Bolton campaign, which is backing the Royal Bolton to be one of the chosen five.

She said: “I think it is important to recognise the good work done at the hospital — which I benefited from, I couldn’t fault the care I received and I think we should all get behind the campaign.”
