A BRAVE teenager has spoken out about her body "rejecting" her kidneys as she faces her second transplant in just four years.

Brogan Haslam underwent surgery in 2011 but is already back on dialysis to prevent kidney failure after her new organ stopped working.

The 19-year-old was born with nephrotic syndrome, meaning that her kidneys do not work properly, causing large amounts of protein to leak into her urine.

According to NHS Choices, most children with the condition respond well to steroids and aren't at risk of kidney failure, but a small number with congenital (inherited) nephrotic syndrome may eventually need a transplant.

Miss Haslam, from Walkden, said: "My body basically doesn't like kidneys. I had a transplant about four years ago, but I'm back on the transplant list for another one because it is already being rejected.

"I'm on dialysis again and this year I have spent more time in hospital than I have at home. It has been hard but I don't mind really — there are people out there who are much worse-off than me."

Miss Haslam is looked after by her mum Sue, aged 46, and stepdad John Thomas, aged 52, and her eight brothers and sisters.

Despite her health problems, Miss Haslam, who studied media make-up at Walkden Sixth Form College, stays positive and hopes to work in the beauty industry in the future.

She said: "I missed nearly all of my high school and some of college, but I managed to finish my beauty course. My condition also means that my bones are quite weak, so my mum comes everywhere with me in case I fall.

"I get really anxious about a lot of things and don't like to be in public places, so tend not to go out much. But I love practising make-up techniques on my sisters and hope to do that as a job in the future."

Over the years, Miss Haslam has raised money for children's charity Rays of Sunshine — which recently helped her dreams come true by arranging her to meet Sam Faiers from The Only Way is Essex.

She was treated to a VIP experience at the Perfume Shop at the Trafford Centre, and got a signed bottle of the reality TV star's new perfume Pure.

Miss Haslam said: "I love TOWIE so was really excited to meet Sam. She was lovely and I'm grateful to Rays of Sunshine for arranging for me to meet her."

Sam added: "It was an absolute pleasure to meet Brogan at The Fragrance Shop. Rays of Sunshine do incredible, and invaluable, work in granting children their greatest wishes, so it's great to be able to celebrate something so positive."
