No surgeries or appointments at Royal Bolton Hospital were cancelled despite a massive cyber attack that has hit the NHS.

Hospital bosses say they did put additional security measures in place to cope with the malware attack, which has affected 47 NHS organisations across the country.

A spokesman for the Bolton NHS Foundation Trust said: "Overall, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Royal Bolton Hospital, was not affected by Friday’s cyber attack.

"We did put into place some additional IT security measures and restrictions as a precaution, but no appointments or operations have been cancelled due to the cyber attack."

NHS Bolton CCG said it was unable to confirm how local services had been affected, and added that the incident was being dealt with at a national level.

Dr Anne Rainsberry, NHS Incident Director, said: “We’d like to reassure patients that if they need the NHS and it’s an emergency that they should visit A&E  or access emergency services in the same way as they normally would and staff will ensure they get the care they need.

"More widely we ask people to use the NHS wisely while we deal with this major incident which is still ongoing.

"NHS Digital are investigating the incident and across the  NHS we have tried and tested contingency plans  to ensure we are able to keep the NHS open for business.”
