SOME couples were given the best present they could have possibly imagined as Christmas babies were born at Royal Bolton Hospital.

Around 10 babies were born in the maternity ward on Christmas Day, a similar number to previous years.

George James Turner was the first newborn at the hospital, coming at 3.47am and weighing seven pounds and eight ounces.

His parents Jessica Turner, aged 30, and James Turner, aged 32, described the birth as 'life-changing' and expressed their gratitude to the staff.

They said: "It is very special to have the first Christmas baby born at the hospital this year.

"A huge thanks to all the staff in the birthing suite, the delivery suite and the post-natal ward.

"We are over the moon with our Christmas present this year."

Nicola Sproston and her husband Lewis, aged 28 and 29 respectively, welcomed their newborn son into their lives about 12 hours later at 3.10pm.

Mr Sproston said it came as a 'shock' as his wife's water broke while they were opening their Christmas presents and the baby was not due until January 7.

But he said: "It was magical. We are so happy with our present. The staff have all been great."

The couple have yet to come up with a name for their little boy.

Courtney Derbyshire, aged 21, gave birth to Luna Johnston at 7.54pm and she weighed six pounds and nine ounces.

Miss Derbyshire, from Little Hulton, said she and her partner Adam Johnston, aged 29, were also grateful to the staff at the hospital.

She said: "It was not the easiest labour but when she came it was a really nice experience and Luna is the best Christmas gift ever."
