10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News September 16, 2000 A BOLTON couple have been forced to call off moving house because a nearby mobile phone mast has slashed the value of their home by almost two thirds.

Brian and Jacqui Makinson of Duddon Avenue, Breightmet, wanted to move elsewhere in the country so agency HGV driver Mr Makinson could line up more work.

They confidently expected their semi-detached home would be worth £42,000 but were horrified when an estate agency informed them that a mobile mast within 50ft of their home meant it was only worth £15,000.

Mr Makinson said: “It’s a real nightmare. It means we are stuck now. We just can’t afford to sell. We feel like we’ve had £27,000 stolen from us.

“We won’t be able to move until we die.”

25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News September 16, 1985 A MOTHER and daughter both ended in hospital with broken bones on Friday the 13th.

Mrs Linda Clegg, or Plodder Lane, Farnworth, broke her toe at exactly the same time as her 13-years-old daughter, Anita, was breaking her ankle at school.

Mrs Clegg said: “I was in the bedroom when I stubbed a toe on a box. It was really painful. The next thing I knew the phone was ringing.”

The telephone call was from the secretary of St Augustine’s School, Farnworth. She was ringing to tell Mrs Clegg that Anita was being taken to hospital after breaking her ankle playing netball.

“I asked the school to direct the ambulance to our house. They picked me up as soon as they had picked Anita up from school.

But in recommending this, the Housing Committee has decided that one-bedroom dwellings should be included in the differential rents scheme. This means that some tenants could be faced with an increase of as much as 15s a week. The increases, if approved by the council, will come into operation at the beginning of January.
