SEVEN groups in Bolton and Bury are to share cash injections of more than £18,000 of National Lottery money.

One of the groups benefiting from the scheme is the successful Bolton Lads’ and Girls’ Club, which runs a series of activities for youngsters.

Their £975 grant comes hot on the heels of manager Jeremy Glover’s MBE and will be used to upgrade a minibus.

The money comes from the lottery’s Small Grants Scheme, which aims “to improve the quality of life in the community”.

The Regional Awards Committee, made up of voluntary members, makes the decision on behalf of the scheme.

The largest grant of £5,000 is awarded to the Bury Metropolitan Deaf Society, a support group for people with hearing problems.

The money will be used to fund two gas fires and fireguards, some blinds, a cooker, microwave and fridge freezer and new floor covering.

THE saga of the lost lollipop lady outside Scot Lane End School, Blackrod, has taken a new twist . . . in the House of Commons.

Greater Manchester Council withdrew the school’s right to a crossing patrol earlier this year because the number of children using it no longer met the highway department’s criterion.

Blackrod parish Council then offered to pay the lollipop lady’s salary themselves and to meet any GMC administration costs. But the council rejected the plan as legally impossible.

Enter Bolton West MP Tom Sackville, who tabled a Parliamentary question to Transport Minister Nicholas Riley demanding to know “whether he plans to allow local groups such as parish councils or parent associations to maintain school crossing patrols”.

Junior Transport Minister Lynda Chalker informed the MP that the matter rests entirely with the local county council.
