10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News March 6, 2000 VENDORS handing out morning newspapers to Bolton commuters have been criticised for being too aggressive.

In one instance, a vendor near Bolton Railway Station was so determined to give his newspaper away he opened the passenger door of a car and threw the paper in — even though the female driver had said she didn’t want one.

Greater Manchester Police has said it is very concerned about vendors who stand in the roadway. Two morning newspapers are handed out by vendors at rail, bus and Metrolink stations, throughout the Greater Manchester area from 6am to 11am six days a week.

25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News March 6, 1985 MORE than 400 workers brought their factory to a standstill today in a row over security measures.

The workers, members of SOGAT, went on strike in protest at the way bosses at Fort Sterling, Mansell Way, Horwich, handled a theft investigation.

They claim management scrapped the agreed procedure for disciplinary matters by interviewing 20 nightshift workers over the theft of some tools without a union representative to be present.

50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News March 7, 1960 THE Little Lever Co-operative and Industrial Society is to be taken over by the Bolton Co-operative Society. No date has yet been fixed for the transfer, but it is believed it will be in the next few weeks. The present staff of the Little Lever Society will not be affected.

The members of the society have agreed by a unanimous vote to the transfer of all stock, property and other assets and all engagements.

A committee recommendation that the time was opportune for such a move in view of decreased trading and dividend over the past few years was unanimously adopted.

100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News March 7, 1910 GREAT consternation arose in the town on Sunday evening shortly after eight o’clock as the result of a great illumination in the sky. The glare emanated in the Haulgh district, and people rushed thither in thousands from all parts of the town, even the Bradshawgate parade being deserted.

An extensive block of buildings consisting of corrugated iron and wood was ablaze and had become a veritable furnace.

From a spectacular point of view it was a magnificent sight.

The materials that formed the building and the stock therein easily contributed to the fire’s ravages.
