YOB culture is soaring in Bolton — more and more people’s lives are being made a daily nightmare.

A police chief has accused parents of teenage tearaways of abdicating their responsibilities.

But the majority of people who have flooded the BEN with calls in the past two days have put the blame on the police for either not doing enough — or failing to respond to calls. And most want to see bobbies on the beat in the known trouble spots.

STRIKING schoolchildren in Bolton were today warned: “Behave or face disciplinary action.”

As reported yesterday, groups of pupils have been copying their teachers by staging their own walkouts.

At Smithills School, “flying pickets” from nearby Sharples tried to persuade other pupils to stay out.

Up to 80 children from four local schools today staged an anti-strike demonstration on the steps of Bolton Town Hall.

They demanded teachers return to work to help them prepare for vital exams.

TEN-YEARS-OLD Paul Mulraney, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Mulraney, 12 Kirkwall-drive, and 10-years-old James Ridings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ridings, 29 Henry-st., wanted to produce a play.

They couldn’t find any to suit them so they wrote their own.

On four quarto sheets was written a blood-curdling epic called “The Gamblers,” including police and all sorts of shady characters.

Both boys are in Mrs. M. Bradbury’s class at the Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School, and the play will be staged before their class-mates.

SO successful was last year’s garden and window-box prize competition in the Bilbao-st. district of Halliwell Ward that it was announced at a public meeting on Monday evening in St. Luke’s School that the Committee had decided to extend the competition to Beckett-st., which meant an addition of about 100 houses in the Victory neighbourhood, and also to have a children’s competition in the square round Marsh Fold-lane, Musgrave-rd., and Chorley Old-rd.
