10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, March 10, 2000 VERNON Kay, the Bolton-born model making a name for himself on the small screen, is the new presenter for a top Saturday morning programme on BBC1.
Vernon, from Lostock, has been chosen to front a programme called FBI which will take over from Live and Kicking when it finishes its run next month.
“FBI will run for 22 weeks from Saturday, April 22,” revealed Vernon — who used to be a cleaner for Bolton Council before finding fame on the international catwalks.
Vernon, who was spotted by Select Model Agency at the Clothes Show in Birmingham, has already worked for some of the world’s most famous fashion designers but he says he sees his future in television.
25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, March 10, 1985 BOLTON Wanderers’ fans returning from a match at Preston went on the rampage on a train causing damage running into thousands of pounds.
Seats, light fittings and toilets were ripped out and hurled through windows on the football special. Extra police — some with dogs — were rushed to the scene after the train was forced to stop at Lostock.
The communication cord had been pulled repeatedly, eventually locking the braking system and stranding the train for more than an hour.
50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, March 10, 1960 A 12-YEARS-OLD girl who told the Juvenile Court at Chorley yesterday that she had left home because her father’s housekeeper had sometimes hit her with a dog lead, and pulled her hair, sometimes for no reason, was placed in the care of the Lancashire County Council.
Chief-Insp. J. Taylor told the court that on Feb 23 the girl was reported missing. She was found the next day, wandering in Astley Park, Chorley. The girl was depressed and said she did not wish to return home.
100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, March 10, 1910 Two Edgworth farmers brought a dispute before Sir William Hulton. Bart. and Mr. E. T. Crook at the County Police Court, for settlement. It arose in a number of summonses for assault. John Whewell was the tenant of Crowthorne Farm, Edgworth, and also of Little Edge farm adjoining, and Joseph Entwistle was the tenant of Slack’s farm. The meadows of the two farmers were separated by a bridle path. On Saturday last Entwistle proceeded to remove Whewell’s fencing, trespassing, as Whewell alleged on his land for the purpose.
Entwistle’s two sons then proceeded to assault Whewell. His daughter endeavoured to separate them, then the older Entwistle kicked her four times on the legs, which necessitated her being treated by Dr. Aldernon.
