10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, March 13, 2000 Wanderers star striker Bob Taylor told pupils they needed to work hard in class to achieve their goals in life.
The centre forward warned them not to follow his example when he called in to see the 14-year-olds at the Reebok Study Support Centre.
He told a group from Hayward School how he neglected his school work to concentrate on football.
But he had been lucky because the gamble paid off and he achieved his dream of becoming a footballer.
The children are getting extra help with their lessons in the run-up to national tests and were delighted when Bob dropped in.
Organisers expected him to pop in for 30 minutes but the children were thrilled when the father-of-two stayed for more than an hour to tell them the importance of concentrating on school work.
Natalie Goodier asked him about the glamorous side of the job and he told her he thought some Premier League players were carried away with the glamour.
Suraj Sonara was concerned about the Wanderers’ form, but he assured them the return of Eidur Gudjohnsen would inject a sharper edge into the team.
25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, March 13, 1985 MORE than 500 children at a big Bolton comprehensive school were sent home today because of a gas leak.
The pupils, from Hayward School, will also be told to stay away tomorrow and Friday. The fault is expected to be repaired by Monday.
It is the second time in a month that children at the school have missed classes because of gas problems.
In February, nearly all except fifth formers were asked to stay out after a leak in another part of the school.
Today, headmaster John Close said the fault had cut the central heating in a boiler house serving 40 classrooms.
“We have some supplementary heating but it is only reaching one block,” he said.
“It means that the first and second years will be out for three days while a new gas main is laid.
“We should look at all the school’s gas services. The mains were laid in the 1950s and may all need replacing.”
50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, March 13, 1960 DID you know that Bolton has a brewery?
We would have thought that most people did — which shows how dangerous it is to take things for granted —and we were surprised to learn, after publishing a picture-feature on Saturday about “Beer, beer, glorious beer”, that there were people in Bolton who didn’t know that the town has more than one.
Actually the Crown Brewery, where are pictures were taken, has long been established in premises off Derby Street.
100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, March 13, 1910 A serious charge of wounding a police officer with intent to do grievous bodily harm was put against two men at the County Police Court.
Supt Wilson said a PC was on duty on Saturday night when the two men, without any provocation, suddenly rushed at him. They kicked him unmercifully, causing a head wound.
