BOLTON Council has again won a prestigious national award for its work improving the environment.

Coronation Street star Liz Dawn — who plays Vera Duckworth — presented the local authority with a People and Places award last night in a ceremony at the Radisson Hotel at Manchester Airport.

Bolton has frequently been among the Tidy Britain Group’s award winners over the years. In August, the town won the Queen Mother’s Birthday Award.

Last night, Bolton won the “best community involvement” award and was runner up in the “best community awareness” and “best management of litter and waste” category.

BOLTON housing Committee may spend during 1960-61 a maximum of £20,000 on replacing fittings and fixtures in pre-war-built council houses at Crompton Fold., Union-rd., Moorland-gr. and Tudor-ave.

A special sub-committee suggested to the Housing Committee yesterday that fireplaces and sinks should be included in all of the replacements.

Tenants who wanted a tiled fireplace instead of a bungalow range, would have to provide their own cooking facilities, and a grant of £5 would be made to a tenant who replaced privately an obsolete sink.

The Housing Committee all agreed that all houses on the Union-rd. estate should have lavatory replacements.
