YOUNG gardeners from a Bolton school are experiencing the sweet smell of success after being chosen to exhibit at the prestigious RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park.

Billed as a celebration of the best in gardening, St Catherine’s CE Primary School’s eco-club was chosen to create their own garden for the show, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors in the coming week.

Karen Graham, headteacher, said: “The eco-club at the school loves gardening and we are an RHS school.

"We have again won Horwich in Bloom this year, so this was the next step, from gardening in school grounds to exhibiting at the Tatton Park Flower Show.

“We decided to go big. We don’t do things by halves.”

Green-fingered youngsters decided to create a magical garden depicting the popular poem The Owl and the Pussycat and have been working on it since November, creating the pea-green boat out of living willow structure, and dec-iding which plants to use.

It is thought that the school in Horwich is the first in the borough to exhibit at the famous flower show, and they have been sponsored by the school’s parent-teacher association while Horwich Town Council has provided funding too.

Mrs Graham said: “It has been an amazing experience for them, something they’ll never forget.

“I don't think it has hit them how many people will be visiting and looking at their exhibit, and that will another amazing experience for them as they get feedback.”

Children were at Tatton putting the finishing touches to their garden yesterday.

Lucy Tyrer, aged 11, said: “It is amazing to be exhibiting at this flower show. I am very proud.

“It has been a great creative team effort. I will definitely be bringing my parents to see it.”

A total of 17 young gardeners were responsible for the design and creation.

Luca Kelly, aged nine, said: “A lot of planning has gone into the garden and it is great to see it come together in this impressive way.

“It is so good that so many people will see it because they will see how much effort has gone into it along the way.”

RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park runs from July 23 to 27.
