AN aspiring Horwich designer is to feature in a primetime BBC show after revamping a stranger’s kitchen.

Interior design fan Graham Gartside was spotted by television scouts after they saw an advert he had posted of his ‘cool’ house on a room-renting website.

The 36-year-old, who works in the graphics department at Rivington and Blackrod school, was then invited to feature on new BBC One show Your Home in Their Hands.

The show asks homeowners to hand over their keys to ambitious amateur designers for a five-day home makeover.

Mr Gartside, who lives in George Street in Horwich, said: “I was really excited to be invited to do the show after the BBC saw my house on the AirBnB website, which I use to rent out a room.

“Apparently they thought I had a cool kitchen. Interior design is something I am really interested in and would definitely like to get into.”

Graham’s episode was filmed back in May and saw him and another wannabe designer travel to Coventry, where they were each asked to decorate a room in a couple’s house.

The 36-year-old said the challenge laid out by the homeowners was a tricky one, adding: “This couple had reached a stalemate over their tastes and didn’t know what to do.

“I was tasked with mixing something to do with Coventry City with some aspects of Indian Heritage, which wasn’t easy.”

Graham was handed £5,000 to complete his kitchen make-over.

He said: “I won’t reveal everything that happened, but there was another designer working in the house and things definitely got a bit competitive between the two of us.

“After doing our individual rooms we were asked to work together on a final room and we both had different opinions about how it should look.”

The first episode of the show was aired on BBC One on Thursday, September 25, and while Graham’s episode is due to be the sixth one aired, the BBC stated it is yet to confirm the exact date that it will go out.
