A MEETING was held to discuss the start of work to pull down buildings on the Horwich Loco Works site.

The meeting, which was held at Rivington House, next to the site, was called by the owners of the site, Bluemantle and local councillors and other interested parties were invited to attend.

In September, Bolton Council planning committee approved outline plans to build 1700 new homes on the 189-acre site.

The development, will also create 50 acres of open space and 20 acres of land suitable for business development.

The plans have been the source of criticism from many local residents for some time who have concerns regarding issues including sporting provision on the site, the strain that could be placed on the road network and the potential contamination of the industrial site.

The scheme was put forward by developers Horwich Vision — which is a collaboration between Bluemantle and the Emerson Group , owners of the Middlebrook site.

The meeting heard about initial plans to pull down two of the buildings that currently lie on the site — with buildings numbered 4 and 11 expected to be taken down within 6 months.
