RESIDENTS are being asked to help Bolton Council to “kerb” difficult road crossings in the town.

Councillors representing the Horwich North East ward have called on people to let them know of locations which they believe should have dropped kerbs installed.

The initiative, spearheaded by councillors Kevin McKeon, Joyce Kellet and town mayor Richard Silvester, has been launched in a bid to make the ward more accessible for people who have difficulties crossing roads with high kerbs — including those using wheelchairs or mobility scooters or people pushing prams.

Cllr McKeon said: “This is a particularly important issue for the elderly and for mothers with prams and disabled people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and other equipment.

“There are a significant amount of groups in the ward who will therefore benefit from dropped kerbs.

“This is all about making our streets accessible for as many people as possible and although we have a limited budget we would encourage people to get in touch with their suggestions.”

The most recent dropped kerb to be installed was outside Rivington House in Lord Street — following a request from a resident.

A small budget is still available for more dropped kerbs to be completed in the ward and residents are encouraged to contact their councillors with proposed locations.

The ward runs from the Chorley boundary and includes everything to the north of Scholes Bank, north of Lee Lane and north of Victoria Road up to its junction with Fox Street.

The area also includes pavements east of Fox Street and everything north of Chorley New Road from Fox Street until the Bolton boundary around the Princess Road and High Bank Lane area.

Any residents with suggestions of locations where dropped kerbs could be installed are urged to contact Cllr McKeon on 01204 692115 or email kevin.mckeon@bolton.gov.uk
