HUNDREDS of walkers braved the wind and rain to trek up Rivington Pike on Good Friday.

Despite heavy rain and fog, families from across the area scrambled to the summit — an Easter tradition in the borough.

Walkers huddled in the shelter of the Grade II listed tower at the summit for hot refreshments and Easter treats.

Tracy McVey, of Horwich, said: “We come up every year over Easter despite the weather.

“We didn’t expect this many people today because of the weather.

“But, it’s been really busy.

“We’ve got coffee to keep us warm and we’re huddling together so we’re okay — we’re happy.”

Some walkers began their journey at Rivington Top Barn car park, where they started on the roads before enduring the muddy terrain.

Helen Ashton, of Horwich, said: “My son is on Bondi beach in Australia at the moment. He’s just sent us all a picture of it. We’re not jealous at all!”

Trevor Castledine, said: “Our dog has got a bit muddy on the way up and will probably get worse later."

The crowds descended just a day before the annual Rivington Pike fell race which takes place today from 3pm.

The three-mile route sets off from The Crown Hotel and runners will climb 800ft of the pike.

Entries for the race are £5 which is payable on the day.
