A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving after a crash in Chorley New Road.

One of the two cars spun onto a grass verge near flats opposite Paragon Business Park after the crash, which happened near the junction of Claypool Road in Horwich at about 6.10pm on Saturday.

A police spokesman said one man had been taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital with suspected back injuries.

The spokesman initially said the crash involved six vehicles, but later confirmed it only involved two cars, a Subaru Impreza and an Audi A6.

The Audi was later pictured being removed from the scene in a recovery vehicle, with one of its wheels buckled.

An onlooker said: "It looked like the driver has ended up on the grass verge.

"When I was driving past I saw a man was on his stomach receiving attention from paramedics, and both cars looked like write-offs.

"The sound of the collision must have been quite horrific for people living in close proximity.

"Luckily the car didn't hit any of the flats nearby, but it could have gone through someone's wall.

"There are a lot of tyre tracks on the road now."

Another onlooker said: "It looked like the car lost control around the bend.

"The driver's side wheel of the Audi was buckled and the airbags were out, so it looked like a nasty crash.

"It looked as though the driver may have hit something on the grass verge, but they avoided the house."

Another said: "I saw the crash site at about 7.10pm, and there were two police vehicles and a recovery vehicle on Chorley New Road next to the entrance to Paragon Business Park.

"The recovery vehicle had a car that was severely damaged on it."

The road was closed for about an hour while police dealt with the incident and removed debris.
