RESIDENTS learnt how to 'love food and hate waste' as a cookery demonstration took place at Horwich Resource Centre.
The session was put on by 'Love Food Hate Waste'.
Chef Marie Clare taught guests how to make the most of their leftovers — rather than throwing away unwanted food.
A spokesman said: "UK households throw away 4.2 million tonnes of good food and drink every year.
"This costs the average householder £470 a year rising to £700 for a family with children — the equivalent of around £60 a month.
"There are two main reasons why we end up wasting good food — not using it in time and letting it go off, or preparing too much.
"The aim of the class was to give people a hands-on practical experience that increases both cooking confidence and kitchen skills whatever their budget."
Participants were given tips for deciphering date labels and portioning perfectly, as well as mastering meal planning, savvy storage and learning to love leftovers.
They were also given recipes to take away.
