WAR heroes who gave their tomorrow will never be forgotten by the young people of Claypool Primary School.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War, the school in Horwich is creating a Garden of Contemplation as a lasting legacy of a heritage project involving the children.

Artist David De Souza visited the school to help the youngsters create metal poppies and pupils deepened their understanding of the Great War thanks to representatives from the Lancashire Fusilier Museum who brought in artifacts, with Jenny Mutch, dressed as a nurse, to speak to the children.

Claypool Primary School received £7,700 of lottery funding for a year long project on the First World War.

As part of that they have given a poignant performance of A Letter to the Trenches, which was staged at school and in their local community.

Youngsters have also researched the lives of local soldiers who fought in the war and travelled to the war cemeteries in France, where they saw a grave of a soldier from Horwich.

The year will culminate in the creation of the garden, which will be officially opened after the children return from their Easter break.

The project will be archived for future pupils at the school to archive and learn from.

Margaret Speakman, office manager, said: "The children have been thoroughly immersed in the project, which started 12 months ago.

"The artist created the template and helped the children with the modelling of the poppies."
