A MUM came to the rescue when her teenage daughter went into labour on the way to hospital.

Alison Kelly was driving daughter Kirstie, aged 19, to the Royal Bolton, after she felt the baby pushing.

But she was unable to hang on — and little Lexie was born in the back of the car — with her new grandma helping with the delivery.

Kirstie is now back at home with daughter Lexie after giving birth on Monday.

Alison said: "It was magical. As soon as she was born she cried and I knew everything was okay.

"I will never have an experience like it again.

"I have had four of my own children.

"I remember telling Kirstie to slow her breathing down, which I remembered being told when I was having my own. It happened so quickly I just went with the flow."

Mrs Kelly, from Horwich, added: "Kirstie rang me at about 8.50pm and I was working at the time. I thought I didn't need rush.

"I turned up about 9.15pm and Kirstie said she was in pain and was pushing.

"We had just got to the A6 when she said the baby was coming.

"I stopped the car to check her and her waters burst all over me.

"I never thought the baby was coming — I just stopped to check to reassure her.

"But after the waters bust, I saw the head and she was born at 9.50pm."

Miss Kelly, who lives in Horwich with her partner Oliver Handley, aged 25, and their 20 month-old son Tommy, rang her mum in the evening after suffering back pains.

She said: "Mum was brilliant. I rang her first when I started feeling the pains. I didn't know then I was in labour.

"It was an hour's labour — with Tommy it was seven hours. I had planned the birth — with Tommy I had a water birth and this time I didn't have gas and air."

Dad Oliver was in the back but couldn't move because the front seat had pinned him in.

He managed to pass blankets to Mrs Kelly and ring paramedics.

Mum and baby — born at 6lbs 7oz — left hospital at around 3am the next day to go home.

Mrs Kelly managed to get two hours sleep and then started sharing the story with friends.

She added: "I was planning to change my car but now I am going to keep it for Lexie for when she is older. I will have to look after it."
