WE continue our nostalgic look at the different regions of Bolton with a focus on Horwich.

These pictures, taken from the 1980s, show both progress and preservation.

Trainees from the Bolton Training Workshops installed stocks at Chorley Old Road vicarage in 1984. The stocks were once situated near the Fleet Street junction and were last used in 1805.

Meanwhile, Horwich was ‘put back on the map’ thanks to art students and the Rotary Club.

Restoration of the 30-year-old boundary sign was completed at Scholes Bank. Buildings were also added to the sign, which previously only depicted a wooded hillside. A second boundary sign was due to return to Chorley Old Road but a third sign, which used to stand n Chorley New Road, was lost during boundary revisions in 1973.

Elsewhere, Scores of 30ft pipes were forcing people from the pavement in 1989. The yellow pipes were to be utilised during a major British Gas project, but residents weren’t happy about them blocking their way in the meantime.

Another story from the 1980s involved five teenagers, who were trapped inside a phone box when a nearby tree fell onto it. The group were eventually freed by firemen. Email Horwich memories to gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk
