YOUNGSTERS enjoyed a rare mix of running and reading in Horwich at half term.

The unusual combination of hobbies saw people hot-footing it around the library.

And this time it was not because of a late book return, but rather to celebrate an annual racing extravaganza.

On Friday Horwich Library pulled out its best book and trainers for a Racing Reads event.

The family day saw youngsters spend the morning reading stories and running around the library to get people in the mood for Horwich Racing Week.

Lesley Openshaw, library collections access officer, was on hand with her best French accent to get the children book and exercise smart.

She said: "It was a really good time and the children loved it, especially when they got their medals at the end.

"We were meant to do some reading outside but had to come in because of the rain. However, there was still lots of running around, doing star jumps and playing racing games.

"It helps the children get active while enjoying some reading.

"The idea was to help get the children involved with the racing festival and a couple of parents who came along had not heard of the festival but said they would go and find out more about it."

Around 10 children and their families took part in the event.

Books to inspire them into racing included Ready Steady Mo by Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah and Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam The Cat Burglar by Tracey Corderoy and Steven Lenton — which saw Miss Openshaw trying her best French accent for the reading.

She added: "We try to make the library a hub for the people of Horwich. You can come here and it's not just about the books. It's a special place for everybody and it's nice to be able to support the festival."

One parent, who asked not to be named, brought along her three children for the event.

She said: "It's great that there's organised activities in Horwich like this at half term.

"It's nice to try different things, it's a bit different having a running event at a library!"

The Horwich Racing Festival will feature hundreds of cyclists, swimmers and runners taking part in a range of programmes on June 17 and June 18.

In its 16th year, events include a sports bike 50k across Rivington, which took place on Sunday, as well as triathlons, fun swims and grand prix across the Saturday and Sunday main weekend.
