HERE we have 10 women who took part in a competition back in January, 1980.

The firm of W T Taylor, based in Victoria Mill in Horwich, held its own “Miss Beautiful Eyes” competition.

It was held at the Ridgeway Hotel in Blackrod to find a representative for the national “Miss Beautiful Eyes” competition organised by the National Eye Safety Campaign.

From the left on the back row is Edna Edwards, Lorraine Berry, Joanne Henderson, Shirley Jackson, Michelle Buckley, Nicola Cairns.

On the front row we see Sheila Charnock, Suzanne Hughes, Elaine Charnock who was the winner of the competition and Gillian Partington.

What we do not know is how Elaine got on in the national competition and we would love to hear from anyone who knows.

Today there are far fewer competitions like this — political correctness has helped to ensure a Miss Beautiful Eyes competition would be far from usual.

If you know what happened to Elaine get in touch with Gayle McBain on 01204 537269.
