Mrs Kilcoyne — a Labour councillor — performed the prestigious role twice between 1990 to 1991 and 1998 to 1999.

She also served as Mayoress of the town three times and Mayoress of Bolton in the year 2001 to 2002.

Her husband, John Kevin Kilcoyne was Mayor of Horwich from 1984 to 1985 and her father-in-law, John A Kilcoyne, was Chairman of Horwich Urban District Council between 1934 and 1935.

Her son, James Michael Kilcoyne, was Mayor of Horwich from 1999 to 2000. Mrs Kilcoyne received the town’s civic medal in 2009.

Her funeral was held at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Chorley New Road in Horwich where she spent many years as a parishioner.

Mrs Kilcoyne opened Horwich Resource Centre in 1991 and served as head of its management committee.

Her eldest son, John, died in his teens and her youngest, Michael, died in his forties. She is survived by her son Martin and his family (wife Karen, and sons Matthew and Robert).
