AN MP recently enjoyed a workout session at Horwich Boxing Academy.

Bolton West representative Chris Green visited the community-based scheme to learn about how volunteers use the sport to help youngsters and adults who have nowhere else to go.

Run entirely by unpaid members, the club in Lee Lane holds and Amateur International Boxing Association Affiliation and aims to develop health and fitness in the community.

Founder and manager Paul Daley said: “It’s really encouraging to have Chris Green here supporting us. Our aim is not only to develop health and fitness, we always consider the individual, promoting confidence, self-esteem and pride in our local community.

"In addition to core boxing coaching and ladies box-fit activities we work with local youth clubs, local mental health and special needs agencies.”

Adult members at the club currently subsidise the training for the children, many of whom would not be able to attend otherwise.

The club has also undertaken charity events recently and has raised more than £1,000 for Derian House and The Christie Manchester.

Both male and female memberships start from age nine upwards.
