A FORMER policeman has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for a series of violent attacks on his wife and son.
Frank Chamberlain, aged 63, of Hope Fold Avenue, Atherton, pleaded guilty to a string of assaults during his 17-year marriage, between 1967 and 1984.
He admitted eight assault charges, including two of inflicting grievous bodily harm, and two specimen charges, which served as examples of the catalogue of abuse.

He was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court last Friday.
It was only in 2006 that the family, who now live in Over Hulton, Bolton, found the courage to tell the police what had happened. Detective Inspector Mick Montford, of the Trafford Division Public Protection Investigation Unit, said: "The victims in this case were subjected to years of constant verbal and physical attacks by this man.
"Such was the severity of the assaults that his former wife required hospitalisation on a number of occasions. Despite the fact that some of these offences occurred nearly 40 years ago, I felt it important that this offender should be brought to justice for his actions against people whom he once professed to love.
"Domestic abuse should not be tolerated in any circumstances."
