The offender is described as white, in his mid 20s, about 5ft 8in tall with short brown wavy hair.
The man then returned to Revise Coffee Bar to seek help but was thrown out of the bar and kicked in the lower back as he lay on the ground by a different man
A 28-year-old man was arrested and has received a caution in relation to the second assault.
Detective Constable Andrew Bromley of West Didsbury CID said: "It is completely unthinkable that this man should be subjected to two assaults in such a short space of time.
"To compound matters he was attacked when he went to seek assistance and was clearly in a distressed state.
"I am keen to speak to anyone that witnessed the first assault or anyone who knows the person responsible."
Anyone with any information is asked to call West Didsbury CID on 0161 856 6153 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
