Park woman hit on head by brick

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a young woman was hit in the head by a brick during a violent assault in Withington.

The 20-year-old woman and a group of her friends were sitting in Fog Lane Park, Withington, at about 8pm on Tuesday when they noticed a group of men playing football.

One of the victim's friends went over to the group to see if he could join in but they turned abusive and violent.

During the disturbance, bricks started being thrown and one of them hit the victim in the head.

The group then ran off.

The victim was treated at Wythenshawe Hospital having suffered bruising to her face and a cut above her right eye. She has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

Later that day police arrested a 15-year-old boy from the Withington area on suspicion of assault. He has been bailed until June 12 pending further inquiries.

Police are continuing to appeal to anyone who might have seen the incident to come forward.

Detective Constable Ceri Bolton, from West Didsbury CID, said: "This was a horrendous assault on a young woman who has been left with serious head injuries.

"There were a number of people from the local community enjoying the sunshine in the park when the assault took place.

"I am appealing to the local community, and to anyone who may have been in the park and witnessed the attack, to contact us with information."

Anyone with information is asked to call West Didsbury CID on 0161 856 6090 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
