Labour's Tony Lloyd has become Greater Manchester's first police and crime commissioner.

He is elected as the first police and crime commissioner with 51.23 per cent of the vote.

The turnout figure for Greater Manchester was just 13.93% and the total votes cast were 278,974,

Mr Lloyd will earn up to £100,000 in the role. He will control police budgets, set priorities and have the power to hire and fire chief constables, replacing the police authority.

He said: "I want to thank all the people in Manchester who took part in the election".

He called the low turnout for the ballot "an affront to the proper function of our democracy".

But he added: "It doesn't take away the mandate of the PCC, because that is earned not only in an election [but] by working with the public on every day between now and the end of this term of office, but it is something that we need to look at."

Greater Manchester Police serves more than 2.6 million people over an area of 500 square miles.

The vote:

  • Tony Lloyd, Labour: 51.23%
  • Michael Winstanley, Conservative: 15.6%
  • Matt Gallagher, Lib Dem:14.8%
  • Roy Warren, Independent: 9.8%
  • Steven Woolfe, UKIP: 8.5%.

Congratulations on being elected by a mere 7.1% of the electorate - fewer than one in ten.

I hope the fact that he thanked only the people of Manchester doesn't mean the needs of the other 2 million of us will be ignored!

I have feared that this could be the case,he is Manchester based, represented Manchester people for 30 years so he is probably blinkered into that city.
His Labour pal no-dought, is the leader of the city's Labour party who run that city. It does not seem he will be interested in the rest of the region in thanking Manchester people for their support.

Im a political animal, who would urge everyone to use their vote, god knows, people have fought and died to give us that right.....But i agree with most of the comments on this topic....Was this election really necessary. in the current economic situation, was it money well spent ?...Maybe i should cast my vote on the X FACTOR or IM A CELEBRITY , at least that would not be at the taxpayers expense

I did not vote for Tony Lloyd. I find it extraordinary that a man who seeks to lead Greater Manchester Police and whose responsibilities will doubtless include counter-terrorism was happy to hob-nob with the likes of Hamas when he visited over a year ago. The Government continue to consider that Hamas is committed to terror. Doubtless Jewish residents here in Salford are particularly well aware of the Hamas record on anti-semetism and Holocaust denial.

Hamas are simply not acceptable company for a credible Police & Crime Commissioner to keep. However I accept the democratic process and hope that Tony will serve us all well with our best interests in his new role..

He won the election and will be accountable to all greater Manchester and Manchester residents alike. Like most comments said what a waste of time but we now have him so let's give him a chance.
