Union honours for long-serving teachers

TEACHERS will be honoured for their long service at this month meeting of the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT).

A total of 15 long service awards will be presented to members who have been in the trade union for 25 years and 35 years.

Members are invited to attend the meeting on January 23 to keep up to date with current activities of the union, both locally and nationally.

There will be a speech about ongoing industrial action — working to rule — in a row over pensions and conditions.

Local officers and committee members will also attend.

The meeting will be held at the Watermillock (Toby Carvery) in Crompton Way, starting at 7pm.

I first thought that these were awards for long service as a teacher, as indicated by the misleading header, which is not uncommon for this paper, but now I see that it is for being a member of a union! It should read on the citation, 'in recognition of paying the fat wages of the layabout union leaders and their wives/husbands' expenses, and for agreeing that membership of the union was a guarantee that they could do their job without being hounded by a trade-union thug'.
