Princess Anne to meet sporting heroes on packed visit to town
THE Princess Royal will meet two of Bolton’s best-known sports stars — gold medal winning cyclist Jason Kenny and miracle man Fabrice Muamba — when she visits the town.
Princess Anne will be officially opening the flagship health, leisure and research centre Bolton One on Tuesday.
She will also tour the maternity Centre of Excellence at The Royal Bolton Hospital.
And the town’s leaders have promised her a “special welcome”.
Bolton One was developed in partnership between Bolton Council, NHS Bolton and the University of Bolton and Her Royal Highness will meet representatives from all three organisations before unveiling a plaque at the new facility.
When she arrives at the £30 million centre, the Princess Royal will be met by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Warren Smith, and introduced to local dignitaries, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton, Guy and Colette Harkin, council leader, Cllr Cliff Morris, and Vice Chancellor of Bolton University, Dr George Holmes.
Later she will meet Jason Kenny, who won two gold medals at London 2012, as well as a silver and a gold in Beijing four years earlier, who will show her the Hall of Fame — an area dedicated to his achievements.
He will then escort her to the fitness suite and studio where Bolton residents will be taking part in a training session and spin activity.
Bolton Clinical Commissiong Group chairman, Dr Wirin Bhatiani, will then take Princess Anne into the NHS area of Bolton One and introduce her to staff who were instrumental in setting up the facility.
The Princess Royal will later be met by Dr Holmes, who will escort her to the Athlete Development Centre, where she will have the opportunity to view a number of demonstrations.
Dr Holmes will also present “friends of the University” including former Bolton Wanderers player and Honorary Doctor of the University, Fabrice Muamba, who will take part in a demonstration.
The Mayor will then invite the Princess Royal to unveil a plaque commemorating her visit — and the official opening of the centre.
Bolton Council leader Cliff Morris said: “It’s great that we’re having a royal visitor and she’ll be given a special welcome.”
University of Bolton Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Rob Campbell, added: “It is an honour and a pleasure for the University of Bolton to welcome Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, to the town.”
Dr Wirin Bhatiani, chairman of NHS Bolton CCG, said: “I am honoured to be introducing Her Royal Highness to our highly skilled and committed NHS staff in Bolton One.”
Princess Anne opened Bolton Hospital’s maternity unit 35 years ago and will be returning on Tuesday to open its £20 million maternity and neonatal centre of excellence.
Heather Edwards, head of communications at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The staff at the unit are all excited and have been practising how to curtsy.”

To clarify your rant, you feel that the reason rates are high is due to the fact that some people don't pay council tax.
Would it not be possible to reduce business rates and increase revenue within the borough?.
Perhaps your perceived superior intelligence has got you a job on the council?.
