Visitors to be banned from hospital to stop spread of Norovirus

VISITORS have been banned from the Royal Bolton Hospital in an attempt to stop the spread of the winter vomiting bug.

People will only be allowed to see sick relatives in “exceptional circumstances”.

The ban will continue over the weekend and the hospital will review the situation on Monday.

There is currently one ward, a complex care ward, closed to admissions due to cases of Norovirus at the hospital.

But health chiefs are concerned about the high volume of Norovirus cases in the community spreading to the hospital.

The current cold weather is likely to add pressures to the hospital, with more people expected to be admitted.

Heather Edwards, head of communications at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said the ban was a “precaution”.

She added: “We would like to apologise to people. We know this can be difficult for relatives and patients but we would like to assure them that it is in the interests of patients as we do not want Norovirus to spread.”

Any relatives who feel that have exceptional circumstances are asked to discuss it with the senior ward staff.

In December, when there was a national Norovirus outbreak, the Royal Bolton Hospital managed to avoid a large number of cases by restricting visiting to two per bed and banning children.

Norovirus is highly infectious and hard to contain once it enters locations where there are a number of people, such as schools, hospitals and care homes.

Graham Munslow, public health specialist, said cold weather would help the spread of the bug, adding: “Once temperatures have started to drop, the bug finds it easier to survive. We tend to see an increase in number of cases when we have a cold snap in winter time.”

Best idea for many a moon, and when they lift it they should limit the number of visitors per patient.
The entrance is like a doss house, people coming and going willy nilly. I have seen as many as 6 people sat round beds, bloody ridiculous.

Has banning visitors got something to do with the Royal visit?.

I think you're spot on, they will be frightened to death of being exposed as the disgrace they are , I would be terrified of leaving one of my relatives in there without being able to oversee their so called care.

No wonder the virus flourishes, on a visit to The Royal Bolton last Thursday afternoon I struggled through the smokers at the entrance, made my way towards the corridor, a red flashing light reminded me to use the hand gel, ALL FOUR were empty!!
Bring back proper matrons ie Miss Unsworth, Miss Greaves, no Norovirus or MRSA in their day!

Totally agree with you there... It does seems to be coincidential that this should be happening now, because of the royal visit! And some of the patiants who are vulnerable & need more care and attention, may end up on that LPS (liverpool Pathway Slip) as well! To ease the convenience of this so called DEEP CLEAN and precautionary action! So I'll be worried and concerned if any of my friends or family were in there too... At this moment of time!
