Anger as 114 homes get the go-ahead
9:04am Monday 4th February 2013 in Local
COUNCILLORS have approved plans for 114 affordable homes to be built in Breightmet.
The two separate applications — for 44 homes on land in Milnthorpe Road and for 70 homes at land in Waggon Road, Winchester Way and Mobberley Road — were made by Great Places Housing Group, They were given the go-ahead at Bolton Council’s planning committee after councillors heard that 24,000 people are waiting for affordable homes in Bolton.
Ten of the homes at the Waggon Road site will be bungalows for over-55s, with the remaining 60 sold as two and three bedroom affordable homes.
The 44 homes off Milnthorpe Road will be socially rented at affordable rates.
Residents who had campaigned against the Waggon Road proposals reacted angrily to the decision and said they want to appeal against it.
A petition with 86 signatures, and letters from five residents, were handed in to the council opposing the Waggon Road plans and resident Shaun Lewis spoke against the plans at the meeting.
He said children who used the area would have nowhere to go and wildlife, including bats and deer, would be affected. He also raised concerns about extra traffic.
After the meeting, campaigner Beverley Roscoe said residents were “very angry” with the decision and hoped to appeal.
She added: “Everyone is really disgruntled and feels really disappointed about what has happened. We want to fight this decision.”
There were 24 signatures on a petition against the Milnthorpe Road plans and four letters of objection from residents, with concerns about the effect of the development on trees and ancient hedgerows.
Cllr Lynda Byrne, ward councillor for Breightmet, said she had “every sympathy” with the residents, but there was a need for affordable homes.
She added: “Sadly there is a massive shortage of affordable homes and mortgages are out of reach for many young people.”
Councillors voted to approve both applications, but Cllr Nick Peel criticised Great Places which, he said, could have “given something back” to the local community.
He added: “I hope that our social housing providers learn from these applications and try to get involved in the community as much as possible in the future.
“Social providers need to be giving something back to the residents when they do a scheme like this.”

Fact this town is in need of new affordable housing stock. Regeneration projects have no cash and are stuck behind a mountain of red tape, oh and nimby's lol.
Was it around 20,000 or more people in this town that are close to homelessness, unable to get a council home or can't get on the housing ladder?
Stop being selfish and allow this town to move forward.

Its not selfish when your quality of life changes as it will for them and their house will lose value not to mention the stress of the noise while the estate is being built and the extra traffic etc it will generate round there

I AM MORTIFIED AS IVE RECENTLY PURCHASED A HOUSE THERE AND THE REASON FOR THE PURCHASE IS THAT I WANTED TO ENJOY THE VIEW - IT WILL DEVALUE MY HOME . ALSO , I AMAZED AT HOUW THIS HAS AND CAN BE ALLOWED TO BE PASSED AS THE PLANS WERE DRAWN UP AND PASSED SO QUICKLY AND PUSHED THROUGH - I UNDERSTAND THAT THE LAND TO WHICH THEY ARE BEING BUILT WAS GIVEN TO THE COUNCIL BY LORD LEVERHULME ON THE CONDITION THAT NO HOUSES SHOULD BE BUILD 0N THE LAND - THIS THEY ARE OVERRRIDING.
IT SEEMS WE CANNOT FIGHT AGAINST THESE LOCAL COUNCILS - I WAS WONDERING HOW THEY HAVE MANAGED TO PASS THE PLANS. THE AREA IS ALREADY OVERCROUNDED AND HAS VERY FEW SHOPS AND OTHER FACILITIES LIKE DOCROTS AND DENTISTS AND SCHOOLS.

THE ONLY THING I CAN THINK OF IS THE UNEMPLOYED MASSES WHO ARE COMING IN FROM ABROAD SO WE BUILD HOUSES FOR THEM. WHATEVER NEXT ?? LETS GIVE THESE PEOPLE A BUTLER SERVICE AS WELL

My parents live on Crossdale Road and the plans mean that they will no longer be able to open their back gate as the border fence for the estate will be right up against it. Currently they can open their back gate onto a field where I spent many happy hours as a child.. they will be left with a view of an ugly fence, they're very upset about the plans
I AGREE AND I FEEL VERY SORRY FOR YOU PARENTS , IM JUST SO SURPRISED WHY I DIDNT GET ANY LETTER CONCERNING THE PROPOSED PLANS AND HOW THYE MANAGED TO DRAW THESE UP GET THEM PASSED BY DECEMBER - ESPECAILLY AS THEY ARE NO ALLOWED TO BUILD HOUSING ON THAT LAND GIVEN BY LORD LEVERHULME
I AM JUST SO SHOCKED - IF ANYONE BUYS A HOUSE WITH SOME LAND OPPOSITE I JUST WONDER HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE THE COUNCIL TO CLAIM THAT LAND. THE REASON WHY BOLTON NEEDS HOUSES IS THAT THEY SOLD OFF SO MANY. ALSO DID YOU KNOW THAT SOME OF THE HOUSES AT THAT END ASHLEY AVE ECT WERE BUILD DURING A HOUSING SHORTAGE AFTER THE WAR AND THEY ARE OF NONE STANDARD CONSTRUCTION ? THEY ARE MADE OF CONCRETE THIS MAKES IT DIFFICULT FOR SOME OF THE OWNERS TO SELL ON AFTERWARDS . THEY WERE BUILD WITH THE INTENTION THAT THEY WERE TEMPORARY HOUSING -
PERHAPS THE COUNCIL WILL OFFER THE NEW HOUSES TO THEM ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS?

My parents said it would have been easy to miss the letters as the envelopes were craftily left blank and could have been anything.. they also wanted objections to be submitted by the 26th Dec so obviously everyone would be busy with Xmas plans etc which is exactly what they were hoping for !!!
i agree , it was very craftlly done , the house is tenanted and my tenant might have missed the letter thinking it was just a leaflet (hes only young ) my tenant says he loves the view and its lovely and quiet and now hes upset about it and ive told him there is nothing we can do now and they would have build something on that land anyway at some stage in the future - just be happy its not a bing hall or high raised flats. Ive now seen the plans and they are actually planiting shrubs and things there, I also informed the planning dept that it will de value my property - the people to whom I spoke were rude and stroppy - it was some sort of call centre - not the planning dept itself - apparenlty you cannot speak to them directly ,- and told me that i dont 'buy' the view when i purchase a property so i have no right to it .
The only thing i can can to everyone who has a nice view - take advantage whilst you can - as its not really yours -
I really think that as we cannot fight this council - the public voice is never strong enough - althought we could try chaining ourselves to the trees - but im too old for that
