More snow set to cause problems this evening on the roads

Snow has continued to fall today, making road conditions hazardous across Bolton.

Snow and gale force winds returned to Bolton today, less than a fortnight after blizzard conditions brought disruption to schools, airports and traffic networks.

Poor driving by some motorists made the road networks worse this morning with jams reported on the A666 and parts of Farnworth. Gritters had been out in Bolton yesterday evening and overnight.

A man died when his lorry overturned on the M60.

Road experts have warned people to be careful when driving home.

Up to 10cm of snow has been predicted to fall along with 60mph to 70mph winds, as experts warned that temperatures were set to continue plummeting throughout the week.

Tailbacks on the A666 stretched back from the M60 across the town centre towards Blackburn this morning.

The M60 was closed between Junction 19 and Junction 20, near Heaton Park, at around 6.10am until 8.30am after a large van was overturned.

A man was rescued from underneath the van by fire fighters and was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He later died.

Traffic was also gridlocked along the A666, A682 and A56 caused by ice and snow.

Planes at Manchester Airport were temporarily grounded due to the weather but services are now back to normal.

Bosses decided to halt operations at 8am to allow snow and ice to be removed from the runways after poor weather overnight.

There was also queueing traffic on M62 eastbound between Junction 7, A57 and Junction 12, M60 at the Eccles Interchange because of an accident involving two cars earlier on.

Matrix signs are currently set to 40mph.

Stephen Davenport, senior forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "Over the next 24 hours we'll see localised snow storms By the end of the week there could be more snow storms around.

Snow storms brought parts of Bolton to a standstill at the end of January. Hundreds of drivers were forced to spend the night in their cars on the M6 in Lancashire after more than a foot of snow fell.

The cold snap was followed by widespread floods caused by melting snow and heavy rain.
