Vigil for first anniversary of man shot dead

FAMILY and friends of a Bolton man shot dead by armed police will hold a vigil on the first anniversary of his death.

Anthony Grainger, aged 36, who lived in Deane, died from a single shot fired by a police officer at a car park in Culcheth, Warrington, on March 3.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death after police said armed officers swooped in a “pre-planned” operation.

Three men who were accused of plotting a robbery with Mr Grainger were cleared of all charges after a trial in Manchester last September.

The memorial vigil will be held in Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester at 1pm on March 3, which has been organised by the Justice 4 Grainger campaign.

They are calling for the officer who pulled the trigger to face criminal charges.

The IPCC investigation is continuing and the results are expected to be passed to the Crown Prosecution Service later this year.

All occupants of the stolen Audi Anthony was in at the time were wearing gloves and had rolled up balaclavas on their heads.
OK so no firearms were found in the vehicle afterwards but the police armed response team have only micro seconds to react to a possible situation where they may be shot at and themselves killed.
By all accounts Mr. Grainger was no angel whose family must have been quite aware of the circles he moved in but were complacent in his lifestyle choice until he came to an unfortunate end at the hands of a police armed response team all of a sudden want to paint him as being some kind of model father unjustly killed. As the saying goes " if you play with fire your going to get burned ".
The only true victims in this case are Mr. Graingers children who now have to grow up with the knowledge that their father thought more of his criminal lifestyle than he did of being a good father and role model to them.

Agree Winston...I can't muster much sympathy, nor for the brothers who were killed in the stolen car in Boothstown or anyone who is killed during criminal activity. Supposed to be grown men...they choose that life style, sympathy for any children affected though.

These men were found innocent and after a see-through smear campaign against Grainger and his family, I don't choose to trust anything this or any other newspaper says about him. So I KNOW that you don't know everything - why don't you shove your callous comments somewhere dark and moist?
