Supermarket shuts after loss of power

ASDA’s supermarket in Astley Bridge was forced to close its doors after a power loss affected the tills.

The store shut yesterday until about 5.30pm.

A spokesman said: “The tills at our Bolton store were temporarily affected by power loss and we took the decision to close the store while they are fixed.

“In these circumstances, standard practice is to agree a price with customers already in the store so they can still take their shopping home and stock up their fridges and larders.

“We pride ourselves on putting our customers first and saving them money and we usually err on the side of caution in these circumstances — I wouldn’t be surprised if our customers bagged themselves a bargain.”

The amount of money that goes through there every day would imply they need to look at a standby generator. The article doesn't say when the outage started but what of the food safety issues with defrosting food and items in chiller compartments? Probably not an issue for the world's largest retailer
