‘Huge’ cannabis farm uncovered next door to doctor’s surgery

A HUGE cannabis farm was found in a house next door to a doctor’s surgery.

Officers raided the home in Chorley New Road, Horwich, after a tip-off.

Two people living at the address were arrested and have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Police obtained a warrant and searched the house, next to Bolton Community Practice Market Surgery Branch, on Friday.

Neighbours said that they were there for several hours while the “sophisticated” cannabis farm was taken down piece by piece.

Officers found a full cannabis farm with lighting and fans, as well as 148 plants and a crop which was drying.

The street value of the find is not yet known, although it is expected to be a five-figure sum. Sgt John Nicol, of Bolton West neighbourhood policing team, said: “It was a full farm set-up and there were a large number of plants growing.

“Most were nearly fully grown, nearly ready for cropping and a large amount was drying out too. The street value will be a substantial amount, so this is a good find.” A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “There were people living at the house, but I did not know them. They were taken away by police.

“The officers were here from about 3pm to 6.30pm. I saw them bring out 14 bags of plants.

“I was really surprised as this is a nice road and it’s next to the doctors.

“It just shows you don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.”

Police urge residents to report any signs of cannabis farms which includes smells, constantly closed curtains, condensed windows and people coming and going at unusual times.

They also ask that landlords make regular property visits.

Anyone who has information should contact police on 101.

This sounds pretty hypocritical to me that the UK government licences pharmaceutical giant GW Pharma to grow high-potency cannabis i.e. 'skunk' with a monopoly and to make whole extract cannabis medicine called Sativex for the US market (yet UK sufferers of multiple sclerosis for whom Sativex was created are priced out of the market), yet wastes our taxes arresting UK cannabis growers who operate as start-up entrepreneurs. Talk about corruption.

I have heard reports that the police have caused more damage to the property when they raided it, than the cannabis grower and have also greatly exaggerated the number of plants and the value of the grow. Also, it was not 'Huge' as stated, but in one room. It wasn't a farm either, ridiculous! This type of growing will continue till any government decides to legalise cannabis.

I'm sure,if they tried, the police could find something more constructive to do.
Protecting the interests of the large drug companies is in no ones interest.

The police call any size cultivation a "farm", even a few plants. It sounds better to say that they busted a cannabis farm than they busted a man who had six plants.

Strange how the drug plod seem to hardly ever bust Crack labs or Heroin distribution dont you think?
The problem with any Government is they will never, unless facing stone wall evidence they cannot question or deny, admit they were wrong about something like cannabis.
If they got things right alcohol would not be the huge problem it is.

The funniest bit for me personally is the 'neighbour, who asked not to be named' and their comment:
“I was really surprised as this is a nice road and it’s next to the doctors."
Well yeah, isn’t that the point of these places – to be as inconspicuous as possible? You never hear anyone saying: "Well I'm really surprised the house was being used as a drugs farm, this is a rotten street in a crime ridden area, there are people coming and going at all hours ferrying large bags of compost and heat lights and it's next door to the slaughter house too"
