TRAIN passengers were told that a future Labour government will put their needs before profits during the conference.

Shadow transport secretary Mary Creagh criticised what she called “secret” fare rises by operators including Northern Rail and said that commuters were fed-up of overcrowded conditions.

In August The Bolton News exclusively revealed that, as of September 8, Northern Rail would be scrapping off-peak tickets between 4pm and 6.30pm on weekdays, forcing struggling passengers to pay more or wait around for hours.

Ms Creagh said: “A Labour government will deliver the biggest reform of the railways since privatisation to deliver a better deal for taxpayers and passengers.”
