BOILER thieves attempted to set a flat on fire by putting a toaster in the microwave.
Fire crews were called to a flooded flat at Stone Church in Cannon Street, Daubhill, at about 2.30am on Saturday.
The burglars had ripped the boiler out of the unoccupied flat on the third floor.
Police and fire crews have now launched an investigation.
Firefighters had been called out to burning trees outside the same property about three hours before.
Crew manager Phil Dearden said: “The water had started dripping through the ceilings of the other properties. When we got in the flat we saw they had tried to start a fire by putting a toaster in the microwave.”
A police spokesman said: “We are investigating.”
