LEIGH'S golden girl Heather Frederiksen rounded off an amazing 2012 with a brilliant start to 2013 by being made an MBE in the New Year's honours list.

The Paralympic swimmer, who now lives in Lowton, won silver medals in the 2012 400 metres and 100 metres freestyle events as well as a silver in the 4 x 100m individual medley event then topped it all by winning gold by taking victory in the 100m backstroke final.

Heather, who was awarded her MBE for services to swimming, said: "I am honoured, thank you to everyone who's supported me through everything."

Heather's mum, Lynne of Clifton Street, admitted she was the happiest mum in Leigh.

"We are all so proud of her," said Lynne.

Her daughter's amazing performances have earned her lasting recognition in Leigh - a Market Street post box painted gold to mark her Paralympic success will be a permanent reminder in Leigh town centre.
