IT might be bleak mid-winter but Atherton is already looking ahead to a mid-summer dream event.

Atherton Carnival committee has been busy drawning-up plans for this year's carnival and fixed a date for Sunday, June 23.

Committee chairman Brian Seddon is looking forward enthusiastically to the event but is urging people from within the community to get involved early.

"More and more people want to join in the fun and games," he said.

"But we need volunteer stewards for the parade and to help us set up on-field activities."

The organisers are keen to attract owners who have an unusual mode of transport or a vintage vehicle they would like to enter in the parade.

"Last year's event was brilliant, we had support from every one of the town's primary schools, scouts, guides, brownies, air cadets, dance troupes and sporting organisations and great support from Sure Start staff, fire and rescue services, police, the Salvation Army, the 'Nowt2Do kidz' project and politicians and hard-working volunteers.

"Despite the weather people joined in the fun, real community spirit that showed what a great place Atherton is."

This year's event will feature a five a side competition and a quiz night but if you have any ideas for making the carnival even better you will be welcomed by the committee.
