A MOTORCYCLE pillion passenger is in hospital fighting for his life after a serious collision in Atherton.

At around 12.15pm on Monday, a red Honda machine was travelling along Leigh Road away from the town centre when there was a collision with a silver Citroen C3 travelling in the opposite direction at the junction with Hamilton Street.

The motorcycle rider and the passenger were thrown from the bike and the passenger suffered a serious head injury. He is currently in hospital in a critical condition. The rider suffered a broken shoulder.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.

Sergeant Danny Byrne, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is an extremely serious collision which has left one man fighting for his life in hospital. We are urging anyone who has any information about the collision or saw either vehicle travelling on Leigh Road beforehand to get in contact.”
