ATHERTON and Atherleigh ward Labour councillors are celebrating after securing a deal with Wigan Council to keep Atherton Library in its existing building.

The existing building’s future had been in doubt when it was earmarked for disposal as part of the council's cost-cuting review.

A new library had been planned as part of Atherton’s planned new school for 14 to 19 year olds but that project was abandoned.

Clr Karen Aldred, on behalf of herself and party colleagues, said: “It is important that the library service continues in Atherton.

"Mark Aldred, Susan Loudon, Pam Stewart and myself are really pleased to have been able to secure the library’s future until an alternative can be found.

"The Labour Council has worked hard to make sure no libraries in the borough close, despite the government’s vicious cuts. I’d like to thank everyone at the Council for working with us to help protect this important facility for the people of Atherton."
